What are YOU worshiping?

You might automatically say God or some other sort of spiritual connection, or you might say that you worship absolutely nothing. But this concept deserves some thought. Because I believe we are all worshiping things we might not even be aware of. Our attention alone is a powerful form of worship…

For example, when you scroll on social media, what is predominant in your feed? Is it scantily clad people posing provocatively? Is it fitness authorities working out in a gym and giving advice? Is it beautiful travel destinations? Is it inspirational quotes and motivational clips? Is it hard hitting political commentary? Is it cooking tips? This is not to say that any of these are good or bad. Just a reminder to be mindful about where you are placing the bulk of your social media attention and make sure you feel good about what you are consuming and focusing your time and energy on.

How about your job? If you work full time that is 40 hours a week of your consciousness. Are you doing something you feel good about and believe in? Or do you dislike every minute of it? If you dislike your job and you continue with it only because it pays well, is it due to a tendency to worship money? Material items? All the “stuff” you think you need? Are you worshipping money and things over your daily happiness? Why do we do that? Is it fear of lack? More is somehow always better? Is there a way you can have a job that lights you up, while still meeting your financial needs? Hopefully your job is something that gives you satisfaction and makes you feel like you are contributing something to the greater good while at the end of the day you feel rewarded, happy and fulfilled.

This goes for your free time and social life too. What hobbies do you spend time on? Are you worshipping the great outdoors with hikes and nature? Are you worshipping time spent hanging out in a bar regularly? Are you spending time on healthy meals and exercising your body? What type of people do you surround yourself with? Do they make you feel good and encourage you to grow and expand? These people and places you are putting your attention to have the power to build you up or break you down. If you are surrounding yourself with critical, uninspired and unmotivated people much of the time, you typically will not reach your highest potentials. (By the way this includes family members!) If you are spending your time being motivated by uplifting people and stories then you are likely going to adopt that growth mindset. The things you do, the content you consume, and the people you surround yourself with, really shape who you are and who you are becoming. These are the things you are worshipping and growing in your life. Who do you want to become? What is going to get you there?

Check in with yourself and take a look at where your attention is going. What might you be worshiping? If you feel great about it, fantastic! If you look and think hmmm I might want to make a few changes, then great! The exciting part is that you get to choose what you honor with your attention. YOU get to shape your life. There are only 24 hours in a day. Make the most of every one of them!
